Explore the new season with Jane's five favourite pieces

Adding a few things to your wardrobe gives it new life each season. Here are chief executive Jane Shepherdson's picks for an instant update.

For AW15, we have combined all that is wonderful about the winter season, inspired by the beautiful Shetland landscape. That means style and sophistication, teamed with soft, light and reach-out-and-touch fabrics that feel great to wrap up in when it’s cold outside. Evening dressing with effortless elegance is our calling card and this season, that comes through in texture, print and subtly sexy shapes. These are clothes that nod to the classics but come with pleasant surprises.

See the drama of the irresistibly fuzzy faux fur coats, pops of citrus to brighten classic trousers or knitted ribbed co-ords and tabards that have a very modern take on day-to-night style. Elsewhere, fringing and lace provide the glitz to turn simple shapes into showstoppers. Wear with flats to confound expectations, and stride out into AW15. Whistles has the season sewn up. Now is the time to enjoy it.

1. Longline Tabard Knit

The knits this season are light, fluffy and with enough stretch to make them snug and wearable all day long. The sleeveless ivory tabard is the perfect partner for a pair of skinny black jeans and boots. I’ll probably wear it with a fine knit under it in the day, and sleeveless for the evening.

2. Brandt Soft Saddle Bag

The Brandt Soft Saddle Bag in black has already found its way into my wardrobe as my go-to bag. This is the perfect size, lovely thick grainy leather, and works with just about everything.

3. Selby Cropped Trousers

These trousers are gorgeous, and so completely new, but with a little hint of 60’s playfulness with the kick flare. Worn with a big cream jumper and flat pointy shoes they are modern, effortless and right up my street (out mid-August from Whistles Limited Edition).

4. Sida Lacing Point Flat

The Sida Pointy Flat is vying for third place with the Kalo Fringe Loafer, as both are the shoe of the season, and will take me from day to evening and beyond. This flat shoe shape works so well to flatter the ankle with a cropped flare.

5. Drew Double Breasted Suit

I feel the need to return to something a little more tailored this season, and this effortless double breasted suit (out early August) with gently flared trousers is exactly what I’m looking for. I will wear it with either a fine knit roll neck, or a blouse open at the neck if I’m going out later.
