Unlock Art: Browsing the International Art Market

We’re major art enthusiasts here at Whistles HQ, so when we saw this short film about the growth of the international art market presented by British comedian Sally Phillips, we were all ears – and eyes of course.

Clad in our very own Virginia Lace Jumper and biker jacket, the Smack the Pony comedian brings her own brand of slapstick comedy to a short discussion about our growing interest in art. Footage of Phillips walking around a bright white gallery space is interlaced with jumping animations of ancient artworks as she discusses the history of art collecting. Next, we are transported to Frieze Art Fair where Phillips explains how the art fair has evolved from being a small-scale, industry-only event to a huge public event, with over 200 art fairs now happening across the globe every year.

The comedian also lightly (and hilariously) touches on the ever broadening concept of what constitutes as modern art, citing ‘a pile of dirt’ that recently sold for €17,000.

Whether you’re an avid art enthusiast or slightly art curious, this short film makes for an interesting and entertaining art fix.
