Watch: Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight

A claret-drenched murder mystery meets Western set in 19th Wyoming, The Hateful Eight is the latest film from auteur Quentin Tarantino.

A film that only could have been made by Tarantino, The Hateful Eight is a sweeping, genre-bending epic that’s set against the backdrop of post-civil war America. The story follows bounty hunter John ‘The Hangman’ Ruth (Kurt Russell) and his prisoner (Jennifer Jason Leigh), who travel to a stagecoach stopover to take shelter from a blizzard before finding themselves trapped at the centre of a bloody mystery.

A director known for his obsessive love of the history and techniques behind the artform, it’s no surprise that the film feels like an authentic old school Western. It was shot on 70mm, a film favoured by the genre and noted for its balance of scope and intimacy, and was scored by Ennio Morricone, a composer known for his work on the Sergio Leone Spaghetti Westerns. Tarantino’s uncanny ability to attract incredible talent is also on show, with Russell and Jackson joined by Walton Goggins, longtime collaborator Michael Madsen, and Tim Roth amongst others.

The Hateful Eight will be in UK cinemas from the 8th January.
