Behind the Scenes at LFW: Design Studio Q&A


In the lead up to our debut show at London Fashion Week, we take you into the design studio for a Q&A with our design director Nick Passmore and design manager Gemma Hyde.  



Who are your female style icons?
Nick: Sofia Coppola, Katherine Hepburn, Phoebe Philo, Lauren Hutton, Iris Apfel, Amber Valetta, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Glenn Close, Stella Tennant.

Gemma: Charlotte Rampling, Diane Kruger, Daria Werbowy, Sofia Coppola.


What's your favourite karaoke song?
Nick: Islands in the Sun

Gemma: Go Your Own Way by Fleetwood Mac or Erotic City by Prince – after a few drinks!


What’s your ideal city to visit for inspiration?
Nick: I love New Yorker’s nonchalant approach to fashion – always so laid back yet chic.
Gemma: New York or Copenhagen


Describe the average Whistles day for you?
Nick: No two days are the same which is why its so great! Anything could happen.
Gemma: Busy meetings, fittings, designing – there is never a typical day!


What pieces from the Whistles AW13 collection you are most lusting after?
Nick: Cable sweater
Gemma: Yeah I'm in love with the chunky cable knits


Do you have a favourite thing to do on a Sunday?
Nick: Lie in, then breakfast out somewhere cosy and delicious.
Gemma: A long walk on Hampstead Heath with Stan my dog followed by a pint and Scotch egg at the Southampton Arms.


Do you have any daily routines?
Nick: No – total chaos!
Gemma: No, but I always remember to kiss my husband before I leave for work.


How do you feel when you see someone walking down the street wearing Whistles?
Nick: Successful
Gemma: Proud – it’s always great to see something you’ve designed being worn.


What’s your favourite place for people watching?
Nick: Café Gitane in Soho, New York.
Gemma: Looking out the window from the top deck of a London Bus or the Rose Café at Dover Street Market.
