Whistles Book Club: Art and design must-haves
This season we have selected five art and design books that encompass a host of diverse themes and subject matter. From graphic novels to photography books, allow your creative side (and your coffee table) to be inspired by our latest shortlist.
1. Passing For Human by Liana Finck
A beautiful, brilliant and visually arresting graphic memoir about a young artist struggling against what’s expected of her as a woman. In Passing for Human, Liana Finck is on a quest for self-understanding and self-acceptance. Melancholy and funny, personal and surreal, this is a profound exploration of identity by one of the most talented young comic artists of today.
2. Fashion Climbing, by Bill Cunningham
An enchanting memoir left behind by the original street style photographer Bill Cunningham. Written with wit and spark, it is a must-read about his early career with a fascinating collection of photos of and by Bill – many of them never before published. If you want an insight into mid-century New York in the age of costume balls and Truman Capote, this is the book is for you.
3. The Landscape by Don McCullin
With a career spanning 60 years, one of the world’s most famous and celebrated photographers turns his lens to the landscape. McCullin is drawn to the drama of approaching storms and a wider tone of disquiet in the settings close to his home in Somerset. The result is a collection of fascinating photographs that are far from idyllic. In February 2018, the Tate Britain will host a major exhibition of McCullin’s work.
4. At Your Own Risk by Derek Jarman
To celebrate the life of painter, theatre director, filmmaker, writer and campaigner Derek Jarman, his books are being republished as stunning new Vintage Classics. At Your Own Risk moves from the 1940s to the 1990s as Jarman artfully weaves poetry, prose, memoir and photographs into a rich tapestry of gay experience in the UK.
Available from 3rd January, 2018.
5. Vintage Classic Europeans Series
The Vintage Classics Europeans Series celebrates a shared literary treasury of masterpieces by writers from France, Spain, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands, with beautiful covers provided by British textile design studio Wallace Sewell. Published to coincide with the deadline for Britain’s exit deal with the EU, this is a collection of European must-reads.
