Whistles neighbourhood: Notting Hill
Refer to our expert guide for the best boutiques, finest eateries and cosy cafes that this West London district has to offer.
The Electric Cinema
This ancient picture house is one of the oldest working cinemas in England and possibly one of the most popular in London. Frequented by high-profile creatives and socialites, the space is owned by the prolific Soho House Group, along with members club Electric House and the hip Electric Diner. The film schedule offers a beguiling mix of new arthouse releases and carefully selected blockbusters. Whistles recommend visiting on a rainy Saturday afternoon, and indulging in the biggest box of popcorn available.

Pizza East Portobello
Eastern cool meets Western polish with the recent opening of the hip East End pizza joint on Portobello Road. Sprawled across two floors of an old Georgian pub, the space possesses all the bright and stripped back charm of the original Shoreditch setting. Diners can choose from a table in the main ground floor dining space or relax in the upstairs lounge or compact oasis of the terrace. Whistles recommends trying the house special, with Portobello mushrooms, tomato, fontina and oregano pizza and stopping by the in-house deli to stock up on polenta.
310 Portobello Road, W10 5TA
This multi-label boutique is something of an institution in Notting Hill. Each season, locals flock to the Ledbury Road store to select key pieces for the season ahead, from the fine selection of contemporary and classical designer labels on offer, which includes Acne, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Balenciaga and Fendi. The selection of accessories and footwear is particularly noteworthy and the service extremely attentive.

Wild at Heart
Founded by Nikki Tibbles, this local florist cites inspiration from contemporary art and fashion when constructing its unique arrangements and bouquets. The pre-designed bouquet portfolio is updated each season in line with new trends and the florist is forever embracing creative collaborations with innovative design companies, including hip interiors brand House of Hackney. The company also boasts a concession in Liberty, London’s luxury department store.

Informally recognized as one of London’s leading design stores, this interiors shop specialises in smart and functional furniture for contemporary spaces. Though the shop houses their own designs and those of selected brands, the majority of the pieces reflect a modernist sensibility, and are consistently built to last. Whistles loves SCP’s range of ikat textiles for a pop of offbeat colour and texture.

Part deli, part café, Tom’s is a favourite haunt among Notting Hill’s most discerning foodies. Stock up on delicious pantry-fillers, such as English preserves, Ksumi tea or sweet olive oil cakes from Spain, or willingly take your place in the queue to indulge in one of the deli’s infamous English breakfasts – either way, this is the perfect place for a weekend treat. If you’re in the market for something a little healthier, don’t miss the Traiteur & Salad bar.
226 Westbourne Grove, W11 2RH
This popular market is a hotspot for style-conscious tourists, antique enthusiasts and notably, fashion designers on the hunt for that one garment that may trigger an entire future collection. From Monday – Saturday every week, numerous market vendors line Portobello Road yielding all manner of goods, from vintage outerwear to authentic military clothing and restored furniture. For first dibs on replenished vintage stock, head down early on a Friday morning and don’t be afraid to barter.

This vintage treasure trove has gained its iconic status thanks to its high-profile regulars, including Kate Moss and several Vogue Editors. Needless to say then, the stock is notoriously covetable, with a plethora of designer pieces on offer, from designers including Comme des Garçons and Alaia. Founders Fiona Stuart, Claire Stansfield and Steven Phillip share a wealth of fashion expertise between them and will most likely be able to reveal the fascinating context of any purchase.

Couverture & the Garbstore
This independent store is popular among Notting Hill’s hippest residents. The three- storey space is shared between Garbstore, Ian Paley’s super functional workwear-inspired menswear brand and Coverture, a womenswear, kidswear, accessories and interiors brand headed up by former Paul Smith designer Emily Dyson. Following a leisurely perusal of all three floors, Whistles recommends investing in some Garbstore pieces for autumn/winter to wear with your favourite Whistles staples.

Though the Notting Hill branch of Ottolenghi is compact with just a single table that seats ten, it is forever bustling with hungry locals popping in to grab lunch on the go or just a stack of vegetables for dinner. The popular café chain serves up Mediterranean-infused fare with a super healthy, organic slant. The daily menu boasts popular dishes such as braised artichokes with freekah grains and fresh herbs and fig and goats cheese tart. Delicious, hard to find pantry fillers, such as sumac and salt caramel and chocolate brittle, are also on offer.
