8 Of The Most Anticipated New Hotels Coming In 2023

Travel is roaring back into life after an extended slump and 2023 seems set to be a bumper year for new hotels at home and away.

From a converted fort perched on an inlet in Montenegro to a sleek Portuguese guesthouse from a big fashion name (plus, finally, a design hotel for Margate), our edit of the most exciting arrivals are all due to open in time for the summer exodus.

No.42 Margate

Margate may have a world-class contemporary art gallery, an historic amusement park and a rather nice beach, but it has thus far lacked a destination hotel. That will all change with the arrival of this boutique beachfront spot, which is a sister to No.1 York and No.15 Bath. The numbers may be climbing but fingers crossed the formula remains the same – that’s restful, considered interiors, intimate spas and home-from-home service. It’s set to be a strong year for Britain’s seaside resort towns, as the newbie GuestHouse group are swiftly following up the Margate launch with a new opening in Brighton.

Opens Spring 2023

Le Grand Mazarin, Paris

Following a swish Saint-Tropez retreat, a playful ski hotel and a Gallic idyll on a Provence hilltop, family-run hotel group Maisons Pariente is taking on the final frontier of French travel: Paris. This time, former fashion entrepreneur Patrick Pariente – of Naf Naf fame – and daughters Leslie Kouhana and Kimberley Pariente have enlisted interior designer Martin Brudnizki to work his maximalist magic on a 61-room property in the heart of Le Marais. Expect a showstopper restaurant, two bars and a spa complete with swimming pool, all inspired by the Parisian literary salons of the early 20th century.

Opens early 2023

Hotel Vermelho, Portugal

Portugal has no lack of charming coastal villages, but few have earned the recent buzz of Melides, around an hour and a half’s drive south of Lisbon. What better endorsement for this burgeoning – though resolutely sleepy – destination than the imminent arrival of Christian Louboutin’s first hospitality venture, a boutique hotel with thirteen rooms dubbed Hotel Vermelho (‘red’ in Portuguese – surely a nod to those signature soles). Expect a paen to the visual history of Portugal, with glorious tiled walls and wooden marquetry underfoot, plus art, furniture and ceramics collected by the man himself.

Opens Spring 2023

Boys Hall, Kent

Londoners in great need of retreat but little urge to spend a long time getting to it will find a whole new world at this new country house concept near Ashford in Kent (the fastest trains will deliver you in 35 minutes). Serious effort has been exerted in the renovation of the Jacobean manor, all vaulted beamed ceilings, wood-panelled walls and rich, inky tones. New owners Bradley and Kristie Lomas – both with stellar foodie credentials – opened the seasonal restaurant and bar in September, and now follows 10 individually-designed rooms to overnight in. Book the best for four poster beds and roll-top tubs.

The Hoxton, Brussels

This smart chain’s schedule continues apace this year, with new outposts arriving in Edinburgh, Vienna, Berlin and Brussels. Perhaps it’s the Belgian capital that is in greatest need of an affordable design hotel in the Hoxton mould. Louche, 1970s-inspired interiors lend polish to a repurposed Brutalist tower block, which is particularly handy for the Botanical Garden and within walking distance of Grand Place – one of Europe’s very best central squares. Four floors will be given over to the third roll-out of Hoxton coworking concept ‘Working From_’, while a rooftop bar and terrace promise standout city views.

Opens April 2023

Mamula Island, Montenegro

This long-abandoned fortress on a rocky spit of land in Montenegro’s Boka Bay has been coaxed into a sensational design hotel. First built in 1853 to protect the entrance to the Bay of Kotor, this is the first time that Mamula Island will be permanently inhabited. A careful renovation has carved out 32 rooms and suites, three restaurants, four bars, a spa and three swimming pools; interiors rightly defer to the architecture, making good use of local Cersky stone, aged brass and solid oak. It’s sure to seduce some of the well-heeled crowd that usually head to the most exclusive islands of neighbouring Croatia.

Opens March 2023

Life House Palm Springs

To the mind of the international traveller, this US-based group has landed in a few wildcard locations – think Denver’s Lower Highlands and the Massachusetts island of Nantucket. Here, though, come the crowd-pleasers, in the form of the first New York hotel (in a Beaux Arts building in hip Bushwick) and a property in Palm Springs. Housed in a converted motel, it will feature 66 rooms, a pool and cactus-dotted outdoor lounge, as well as a cafe, bar and restaurant. Life House hotels are always rooted in place, and this time the mood is midcentury meets old Hollywood glamour.

Opens Spring 2023

De Durgerdam

Those who fail to venture further than Amsterdam are missing a trick, we say – though winningly this new lakeside is only a 15-minute drive from the Dutch capital. Housed in a restored 17th century timber building on the shores of the IJmeer Lake, De Durgerdam comprises 14 guestrooms, a reading lounge, bar and waterside terrace. Much of the buzz centres around restaurant De Mark, a collaboration with Richard van Oostenbrugge and Thomas Groot who earned two Michelin stars at Amsterdam’s Restaurant 212. Surrounded by clapboard houses and sailboats, this is the perfect place to do a disappearing act.
