WHISTLES X ESSEN: In Conversation with Marre Muijs For Marre Muijs, the Creative Director of ESSEN, footwear is an extension of a greater philosophy: to strip back the noise and move away from the transience of fashion, instead focusing on creating a wardrobe that’s foundational and enduring. It’s an ethos that forms the cornerstones of the Australian-based brand, where footwear and accessories are designed and crafted with no compromises, both aesthetically and in the materials, manufacturers and production methods used. It’s this steadfast approach to both longevity of style and quality that’s led ESSEN to become a favourite amongst fashion-forward circles — a go-to for renowned influencers and editors alike. For Autumn Winter 2025, Whistles has partnered with ESSEN to create a limited-edition five-piece collection, born out of a shared ethos of creating timeless, long-lasting styles for the modern wardrobe. In light of that, we caught up with ESSEN founder and Creative Director Marre Muijs at our head office, delving deep into her background, the design ethos of ESSEN and the collaborative collection. First of all, can you introduce yourself and tell us about your background? My name is Marre, and I’m the founder and Creative Director of ESSEN – the responsible footwear and accessories brand. I’m originally from the Netherlands, but I’ve lived in Melbourne, Australia for 17 years. I studied International Fashion Management at the Amsterdam Fashion Institute, which provided a broad insight into the fashion industry. I started working in various jobs in the creative and fashion industries, spanning digital strategy and creative branding. After several years, I really wanted to go more in depth so ended up working for a footwear wholesaler – he taught me everything there is to know about the footwear industry, from an engineering and technical standpoint. We spent years travelling the world to factories in India, China, Portugal and Italy. During that time, I really learnt the ins and outs of shoemaking – I loved it, but I also saw a lot that was wrong in the industry. I could not find good, quality, timeless shoes that were ethically made – and slowly, that was how ESSEN was born. First of all, can you introduce yourself and tell us about your background? I could not find good, quality, timeless shoes that were ethically made – and slowly, that was how ESSEN was born. You founded ESSEN in 2016. What was it that sparked the desire to create the brand, and can you tell us about its founding principles? ESSEN is founded on conscious design, considered consumption and ethical manufacturing. Those guiding principles inform every step that I take and every decision that I make. It really came about from spending so much time in the industry and realising, as time went on, how much it was missing the mark and how we needed to change its processes — to be more responsible and have less of a negative impact on the planet. I really wanted to focus on quality, buying less and buying better, creating those foundational pieces in your wardrobe that you’ll still love in five to ten years or more. So with ESSEN, the goal is to create a permanent collection of no-compromise staples — it’s those wardrobe pieces you keep reaching for, day after day, focusing on an intentional wardrobe while reducing your environmental impact. “I really wanted to focus on quality, buying less and buying better, creating those foundational pieces in your wardrobe that you’ll still love in five to ten years or more.” How would you say your own personal style taste has influenced the design language of ESSEN? My style has always leaned towards simplicity, strong tailoring and classic pieces. I’ve never been drawn to excess — I’d rather own fewer pieces I truly love and wear on repeat. That philosophy shapes everything at ESSEN. I also believe an outfit can give you strength. Not in a loud way, but quietly. When you wear something that feels right, that has integrity, it changes your posture and your energy. Shoes, in particular, are the foundation of your wardrobe. They set the tone, complete the look, and anchor how you feel and move through the world – so they need to be comfortable, versatile, and enduring. Each design begins with a true purpose, never a season or trend. We can often spend years refining a design to ensure it is perfect, because the simplest shapes are often the most difficult to get right. Can you tell us about your collaboration with Whistles and what drew you to working alongside us? What drew me to Whistles, firstly, was the brand’s focus on creating foundational pieces for a modern wardrobe — the same approach that guides my design principles. I lived in London for five years, so I’ve always had a soft spot for Whistles, but I think in terms of the quality, the fit, the tailoring, the focus on the details — there were a lot of synergies from a design point of view, so it felt like a really natural fit. We have a wonderful community in the UK that has supported ESSEN from the very beginning, and we’re delighted to finally offer them the opportunity to experience our shoes firsthand — to feel the materials, explore the fit and witness the craftsmanship that defines every pair. What is your approach to selecting collaborative partners for ESSEN? It always comes about quite organically, either through a mutual appreciation, a focus on a new product or a need for a product. It always starts with a conversation, but in terms of actually deciding whether we proceed, we have to be aligned on values. ESSEN is a value-led brand, so I loved when I knew Whistles from a product point of view and that there was a lot of close alignment there, but then also how strict it was with its social practices and the traceability in its supply chain. When I make claims about sustainable materials or responsible leathers, you can see these on the website and you can download them, so I loved how rigorous the process with Whistles was as well. Generally speaking, it always starts with a conversation and, if we align on values, then we proceed. “What drew me to Whistles, firstly, was the brand’s focus on creating foundational pieces for a modern wardrobe — the same approach that guides my design principles.” Touching upon the collection, can you tell us the inspiration behind reworking ESSEN signatures in exclusive colourways and materials? The inspiration for the collection, really, was looking at those foundational pieces. For me, my main one is the Foundation Flat. It’s been in my range for many years and I always try to introduce it in new colourways that are timeless, but still interesting. For this collaboration, we played around with texture, used rich tones which are of the moment, but people will still want to wear in five to ten years time, and focused on quality materials. All the leathers are gold certified by the Leather Working Group, so this also informed which materials we could use. From a responsibility standpoint, sometimes those limitations can make you more creative, which I really enjoy. But the focus really was on those key staples that we believe should be in every woman’s wardrobe, having them in textures and colours that complement the range but also feel classic and timeless. Your footwear has long been a favourite of influencers and editors alike. How important has it been for ESSEN to build this tight-knit community surrounding your brand? Community is at the heart of everything we do, and it’s of course from a press and influencer perspective as well. We’re very selective with who we work with, since we produce in small batches or made to order. It’s also really important from a customer standpoint, because we work on those foundational pieces and it always starts with a need. We work very closely with our customers to understand what they want in their wardrobe, what colours they’re looking for, or even when a design is out in the market, understanding how it fits, if they have any concerns. Then with the artisans we work with, it’s about telling their story and celebrating their craft with the wider ESSEN community. It’s a constant design dialogue and I get inspired by women’s daily lives. We’re always so busy and on our feet and we have to be comfortable, but we still want to look good, so it’s great to have that constant feedback dialogue. It’s so amazing to see influencers, celebrities and press being so supportive of the brand, but I also get equally excited when I see people walking down the street in ESSEN shoes. “With the artisans we work with, it’s about telling their story and celebrating their craft with the wider ESSEN community. It’s a constant design dialogue and I get inspired by women’s daily lives.” Artisanal craft is a key pillar of ESSEN’s production methods, with all your shoes made in Europe using hand-crafted processes and premium materials. Why is it important for ESSEN to focus on this slower, more considered approach to production? I really believe in having fewer, better things and doing more with less. With that comes looking at your wardrobe and focusing on those pieces that you’ve had for many years that you keep reaching for. Because of that, they’ve got to work really hard — the quality has to be really good. I really want to move against overproduction, which is why we do small-batch or on-demand manufacturing. That immediately led me to producing in Portugal, Spain and Italy when ESSEN first started, and now we produce predominantly in Italy — in different parts, depending on different styles, as every factory has its own handwriting. When you focus on the story behind a shoe, the artisans, their craft, where they’ve trained for 20 years to become a master artisan, and you tell that story to the customer the time becomes part of the value of the shoe. I think it creates a greater connection to your wardrobe and hopefully people appreciate that story, so it no longer feels like you’re wearing just a product, but instead someone’s story. It creates more focus on the craft, the product and hopefully a special relationship with those pieces. Personally, I buy with the focus of having things in 20 years time, be it a beautiful leather jacket or a pair of shoes you can hand down to your children one day, where they have a special meaning or memory.
