Obsessions: The trouser suit

Obsessions: The trouser suit

No longer hidden away in boardrooms, the trouser suit is set to make a strong return this autumn/winter.

Christy Turlington

Marlene Dietrich

Embraced by street style stars and designers at fashion week, the tailored suit made countless appearances in the autumn/winter collections. Yet this is not an eighties renaissance. Moving away from the shoulder-padded blazers in colour-pop brights from last season, the suit has been updated in a number of ways to fit whatever your silhouette or style preferences may be.

Sharp-edged suiting has always been the backbone of the modern woman’s wardrobe. Take style notes from Marlene Dietrich’s iconic pant suit that was cleverly paired with a funnel neck knit and black beret, or Winona Ryder’s deconstructed suit in mauve taupe worn nonchalantly with a simple t-shirt. For an easily achievable take on the autumn/winter 2017 heritage trend, we suggest the Check Longline Blazer and Check Crop Carrot Leg trousers to match. The classic silhouette of the blazer feels smart yet has a modern androgynous edge – which looks great paired with denim for the weekend. And for the evening? A kimono sleeve jacket with a soft belted waist works well with slim-fitting cropped trousers – just add a strappy heel and architectural gold earrings and you’re good to go. Or for an ultra-luxurious feel, choose a loose-fit tailored blazer in sumptuous velvet and channel your inner Grace Jones.

Whatever your preference on this new season trend, the suit is shaping up to be the number one pillar of your autumn wardrobe. It’s not just about the show-stopping cut, when deconstructed your nine-to-five tailored suit can add a polished edge to your off-duty style too. And in two months time, we predict that this tailoring trend will be the winning party dressing option.
