The Spring Summer 23 Trend Guide Is Here

Nothing feels quite so optimistic, so hopeful, after the long, dark days of winter than those first glimmers of spring. As the sunset incrementally gets later, giving us a few extra minutes of daylight, our spirits lift and edge towards the new season, envisioning crisp mornings of bright blue skies and the sun’s warming rays. But you don’t need to delay until spring dawns to get that dopamine hit — instead, simply unlock it every time you open your wardrobe doors.

For SS23, we’ve amped up the sartorial serotonin to offer a collection that speaks to that bright, buoyant mood — think technicolor brights that riff on tropical landscapes, tactile textures that evoke days spent by the beach, and slick city-appreciate silhouettes with warm weather detailing that will make Monday morning feel like a Friday afternoon. This collection is nothing if not spirited: our design team in London created it to tap into that vivacious vibe that carries us through until autumn. Get ahead of the GMT clock shift and harness the power of that fun, feelgood factor now.

“Timeless yet trending, consider this your cheat sheet for the season ahead.”

Club Tropicana

Bold, bright and beautiful, this season’s palette is designed to wake up your wardrobe and your senses — bringing a shock of colour that is guaranteed to boost spirits on even the greyest days. These tropical hues draw from far-flung landscapes to offer chic, capsule staples that, in the city, will feel like a modernist artwork. Rich cobalt hues riff on the ocean deep: in classic boxy knitwear and cotton T-shirts, it’s an enlivened choice to update smart-casual looks. Meanwhile, tangerine hues draw from vivid coastal sunsets: a shade this striking needs no accessorising, whether you opt for the statement suiting — a work-to-wedding hero — or the easy-wearing midi dresses, which are ideal in the city or by the beach. Clash your hues to make an impact, while the more colour-shy can tone them down with earthy browns that are a rich, warm alternative summer whites.

Towelling

Summer has become synonymous with certain textiles — from cotton to linen and more recently, raffia. But this season it’s all about the terry towelling. That’s right: the retro fabric has had a chic redo this season thanks to its ability to hold deep, saturated colour, add texture to quintessential closet staples and its snug practicality to boot. For SS23, we turned this texture usually associated with beach towels and turned it into beach-worthy accessories. Rendered in a striking green and fuchsia, the oversized tote bag is capacious enough to fit in all the day’s essentials, from your actual towel to a spare change of clothes, while its architectural structure lends it an urban feel that can easily pair with a blazer and sneakers in the city. Add the matching bucket hat for an effortlessly chic look.

The new co-ord

If there’s anything an effortless wardrobe needs, it’s a go-to co-ord for those time-poor days when you want to look polished and put-together but lack the time for thoughtful outfit execution. And yet, the sartorial staple has come a long way from its roots in suiting. Shirting sets feel fresh in a heavyweight linen: with a button-up blouse and board short silhouette, this candyfloss pink co-ord the ideal balance of femininity and androgyny. Meanwhile, the co-ord concept is applied to other separates to render it anew. Think graphic crochet mini dresses and overshirts; peplum-frilled tops with ribbon-trimmed trousers; billowing cotton skirts with tiered ruffles and matching puffed sleeved tops. And let’s not forget the accessories: miniature evening bags and strappy heels are rendered in matching leathers, from lavender to lime and metallic aqua. ‘Tis the season for tonality.

Animal

Contemplate animal print, and it’s likely a creature found on a safari — think leopard, tiger or maybe a zebra — will spring to mind. But this season, we have looked closer to home for its wildlife inspiration. Drawing from the cattle that roam Britain’s verdant pastures, this season’s cow print is big, bold, bright and beautiful. Featuring artful splashes of brown and white markings, this expressive pattern is so unexpected in the sartorial realm, it both looks and feels like a breath of fresh countryside air. It finds its statement status in a loose-cut midi shirt dress, which could be easily layered with a sleeveless black knit, while a trapeze-cut top is an ideal day-to-dusk choice when heading out for dinner. Meanwhile, the oversized Kayte tote bag will prove a go-to for revitalising understated summer looks.

Nineties Accessories

One of the most referenced decades in fashion right now, the Nineties influence shows no signs of abating. And SS23 is the season to put your best foot forward in the era’s most inspired footwear silhouettes. Chunky, strappy sandals are peppered with nostalgia: the space-age silhouette of the Porto and Sutton sandals evoke The Spice Girls in mood, but are rendered with buckle fastenings rather than velcro for a grown-up take. Meanwhile, slip-on mules and barely-there sandals in vivacious lilacs and yellows recall the heyday of city minimalism in New York mixed with a modern playfulness, and pastel-coloured evening bags are tastefully tiny: each will ensure your summer season is anything but monochrome.

Shirting

A good summer closet revolves around a roster of staples that are worn on repeat — and this season, consider the shirt your everyday hero piece. Versatility is the name of the game, and a good shirt is just as easily layered and worn as an outer layer as it is a standalone hero in its own right. This season, there’s a plethora for any mood or moment. For those that err on the side of classicism, opt for an oversized iteration in a tangerine orange that will look crisp when offset with summer whites. Those in the mood for a smart-casual mainstay will find sartorial solace in the Janet, with its tie detail that negates the need for further accessorising, or the Sylvia jackets — a utilitarian take that will become a go-to. Others feature directional detailing, from the shirred-waist Eleanor shirt in a zingy aqua hue to those with puffed sleeves, capped sleeves or no sleeves at all — pair them all with jeans for an effortless look that is fun, feminine and functional, indeed.

Candy

The summer season is never short of accessories candy, and for SS23, Whistles took that idea and rendered it literal. A checkerboard motif — reminiscent of the liquorice candies found in corner shops, or else in a grandparents’ kitchen cupboard— promises to be a refreshing switch-up from warm-weather patterns; from cardigans to crossbody bags, they’ll bring a pop to everyday outfits. Beaded necklaces and bracelets are delectable yet casual, and will bring a beachy feel to crisp city shirting, while daisy-print pieces are practically delectable. Meanwhile, the boxy, Payton bag features a marshmallowy grab handle, and the mini Tillie tote’s pretty pale pink and orange palette evokes that of the Peach Salad in a Pick n Mix. The only question now is, which will you get first dibs on?
