5 Minutes With Leading Nutritionist Amelia Freer

Ahead of International Women’s Day, we caught up with the leading UK nutritionist and author Amelia Freer on her go-to foods, the advice she’d give to her younger self and the women who are inspiring her right now.

Your go-to breakfast?

A good gluten-free toast with spinach and a couple of poached eggs. In the summer, I go for bircher muesli, topped with fresh fruit and nuts. It’s easy to throw together and one batch lasts a few days in the fridge.

An unforgettable place you’ve visited?

When Willow, my daughter, was a baby, we got to take her to Gili Lankanfushi in the Maldives. I will never forget swimming with her in the warm azure blue sea and the incredible sunsets -very happy memories.

The best books you’ve read recently?

It’s not a novel, but for pure escapism and the most spectacular photography, I love the Land Gardeners new book on cut flowers which was given to me for Christmas. I can spend hours lost in its pages, daydreaming of summer gardens. The Salt Path by Raynor Winn was unforgettable too.

An indulgence you’d never forgo?

Long baths with all the trimmings.

The apps you couldn’t do without?

WhatsApp is brilliant for keeping in touch with my team (we all work remotely) and family that live abroad. That’s the app I use most frequently. I also use VSCO to edit photographs, as well as Headspace and Calm. They’re useful when I am feeling stressed and overwhelmed and I often recommend them to clients.

What’s the advice you’d give your younger self?

Trust your intuition, it is so rarely wrong.

Which women inspire you?

Currently, Greta Thunberg is blowing me away with the strength of her passion and conviction. I am awed by her. The work of Elizabeth David, Jane Grigson, Alice Waters, Ruth Rogers and Rose Gray have also all been incredibly influential to my life in food.

Simply Good For You by Amelia Freer is out now (Michael, Joseph, £22)
