M.I.A is many things: rapper, pop star, artist, activist and mother. After growing up as a Sri Lankan refugee living on a council estate in London, she has since become one of the most provocative artists of her generation – all whilst maintaining a self-assured sense of style.
Matangi/Maya/M.I.A – a feature-length documentary – is full of fascinating footage shot on a hand-held camera by her friend Stephen Loveridge. It delves into some of her most intimate moments, from her interrogating her long-lost father, the day he came home from fighting as a Tamil resistance leader, to that Super Bowl performance and the controversial moments that followed.
Not one to shy away from print and colour, M.I.A is a maximalist who champions throw-on-and-go staples. As we celebrate the documentary that has given her the chance to tell her side of the story, we look back at some of her greatest looks during her time in the limelight.
1. Off-duty update
This outfit is an easy way to make a statement – she simply pairs skinny leather trousers with a standout tee and vivid jacket. To recreate this look, seek out jackets with relaxed silhouettes cast in vivid colours. Our electric blue sheepskin jacket is a contemporary staple that will never date.
2, Showstopping metallics
4. Tough glamour
Who could forget about M.I.A’s 2010 Met Gala dress? In an Alexander Wang gold knit design, draped over a luxurious leather underlayer, M.I.A gave us a lesson in hard-edged glamour with a touch of femininity. Cultivate this look in our Annie sparkle knit, leather trousers and heels for an alluring after-dark finish.
5. Leather's new look
As we head into autumn/winter, we’re thinking how we can embrace buttery leather textures with the same confidence as M.I.A. This forever-cool fabric is more covetable than ever, so pair our slick trench coat with everything from leather skirts to trousers.
