Listen: DJ Kitt Proudfoot’s Wedding Playlist

From that nervously-anticipated first dance moment, to the songs that will get everyone on the dancefloor – we chat to self-confessed music nerd DJ Kitt Proudfoot about the important subject of wedding music.

Currently based in Berlin, Kitt Proudfoot’s CV reads like a roster of the most-revered nightlife spots on the continent. With stints at SPACE and Blue Marlin Ibiza under his belt, as well as residencies at some of London’s most exclusive members clubs, Dover Street Arts Clubs and Shoreditch House, there aren’t many people better placed to advise on wedding music.

What makes a great wedding playlist?

As a DJ you have to be willing to go whichever way the crowd leads you – that’s the great thing about weddings, they’re always unpredictable and fun. For example, at any given moment someone could start a conga line, and if that happens you can’t stick to ‘your plan’, you have to play Harry Belafonte Jump In The Line – you are legally bound.

What advice would you give a couple when choosing a song for their first dance?

Ideally you want a song that means something to you both. But if while planning your wedding you get stuck and cannot think of anything, choose At Last by Etta James and then focus back on the flower arrangements. Pro tip: make sure the DJ is briefed to play the track for 60-90 seconds max before the ushers start to bring everyone else on. At that point everyone needs to release the emotional energy that has built over the course of the day, so the sooner everyone starts moving, the better.

What song always gets you on the dancefloor at a wedding?

That is such a good question. It has been so long since I was at a wedding as a guest. I stay on the dancefloor all night really but if I had left for a moment Sister Sledge Thinking Of You is so undeniable I would immediately run back.
